Norcuron® 10 mg is one of a group of drugs called muscle relaxants.

Muscle relaxants are only used during general anaesthesia. They act by blocking the normal transmission of impulses from nerve to muscle. In this way the muscles are relaxed which makes it easier for the surgeon to perform the operation. Since they also cause temporary relaxation of the lung muscles artificial respiration is needed until you can breathe on your own.

During the operation the effect of the muscle relaxant is constantly checked and if necessary some more drug is given. At the end of surgery the effects of the drug are allowed to wear off and you can start breathing on your own.
Sometimes another drug is given to reverse the effects of the muscle relaxant at the end of surgery.
