Priorities

·         HSES are among the principal concerns of the Research Management Group.  We believe that best practice will only be achieved in partnership with all employees.

·         Questions of HSES protection will be approached with the same sense of responsibility, and just as methodically, as issues concerning quality, productivity and cost-efficiency.

Compliance

·         We will comply with all applicable laws, regulations and other relevant standards.  Corporate Directives, Local Rules and Procedures take precedence whenever they exceed the statutory requirements.

·         We will adhere to Corporate Guidelines for the assurance of HSES protection and to the principles of Responsible Care ensuring that they are translated into effective action.

·         We will be guided by the principles of Sustainable Development.

·         We recognise the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility and are committed to this in the areas of HSES.

Organisation and Responsibilities

·         The Senior VP Research, Managers and Supervisors are responsible for all aspects of HSES protection in the areas under their control.

·         All employees are responsible for HSES protection in the workplace within the scope of their own duties.

Prevention

·         Our goal is to prevent occupational injuries, illnesses and incidents that may adversely affect safety or the environment.

·         We will identify hazards, anticipate, evaluate and prevent or minimise risks to personal safety and security, and the environment in the design, installation, operation and maintenance of buildings, equipment and processes.

·         We will investigate and take corrective action to prevent recurrence of accidents and other incidents presenting a risk to people and/or the environment.

·         We will protect our site from vandalism or unauthorised entry and establish systems to deter persons seeking to carry out any malicious or dishonest acts against our staff.

Protection

·         We will protect employees’ health at work and promote personal health and security protection measures.

·         We will establish programmes to investigate and reduce energy consumption.

·         We will strive to improve the efficiency of our operations so as to minimise our emission to the environment and the generation of waste.

·         We favour re-use and recycling, and we will ensure that any remaining waste is disposed of in a safe and environmentally acceptable way.

·         We will maintain emergency plans to ensure a rapid response against any potential HSES incident or threat.

·         We will encourage the use of more environmentally friendly modes of transport such as cycling, public transport, car-sharing, reduction in unnecessary journeys, purchasing of more environmentally acceptable vehicles etc.

·         We will ensure that resources and consumables are used in a responsible manner to minimise the environmental impact.

·         We will minimise the risk of fire and explosion within the site and work areas.

Communication

·         We will communicate our commitment to HSES to our employees, suppliers, and contractors, and insist upon their participation in complying with this policy.

·         We will provide information and respond to questions about our activities.

Training

·         We will provide information, instruction, education and training to ensure employees and contractors know and comply with HSES rules and regulations applicable to their areas of responsibility.

Continuous Improvement

·         We will continue to improve our performance through effective HSES Management Systems.

·         We will measure our HSES performance against recognised standards and the current state of technology and strive for continual improvement.

·         HSES measures are assessed by means of regular inspections and audits by local managers and by Corporate HSES audits.  If weaknesses or shortcomings are identified, corrective action is taken to eliminate these.

·         We will set objectives and targets, measure our performance and report progress annually.

Security

We will provide the necessary resources and support to protect people, property, products, processes, information and information systems by enhancing security throughout the site.
